Most children's Christmas jumpers come in a narrow band of sizes, which is why matching siblings usually ends up being an approximation. Covering 4 to 14 in a single style means an eight-year-old and a thirteen-year-old can wear the same thing without one of them being visibly in a toddler print.
It is a sweatshirt, not knitwear, and for a child that is the right call. Knit is scratchy at the neck, needs careful washing and gets rejected halfway through the morning. Sweatshirt fleece is soft, goes in the machine after the inevitable chocolate incident, and comes out the same shape.
Before the day
- Wash it once before Christmas Jumper Day — it will be softer and any print smell will go
- If your child is between sizes, size up; sweatshirts look right slightly loose and wrong when tight
- Wash inside out and cool to keep the graphic sharp
- Older children in the range may find a novelty print embarrassing at secondary school — worth checking before you buy
Around twenty pounds is fair for something that will be worn a dozen times in three weeks and then again next year if they have not grown out of it.
