Proper knitwear for a child, which is both the appeal and the problem.
Knit looks better than fleece in every photograph, does not crack or fade, and survives being stored and handed down. What it does not survive is a growth spurt, and thirty-seven pounds for a garment a nine-year-old may not fit next December is a real consideration in a way it is not for an adult jumper.
The way to make it work is to plan for a second wearer. If there is a younger sibling or a cousin, a good knit gets three or four Christmases out of the family rather than one, and that changes the maths entirely.
Before the day
- Size up. A slightly big knit still looks right, and it buys another year
- A soft long-sleeved top underneath prevents the usual complaints about scratchiness at the neck
- Cool wash, dry flat — never hang a child's knit wet
- Warm. In a heated classroom it will be off by lunchtime
