Description
Chenille patches instead of a print, which changes how this ages.
A printed slogan is ink sitting on fabric; it fades, cracks and eventually looks tired. Chenille lettering is stitched on as raised fabric, so it keeps its texture and catches light in photographs. It is the same construction as a varsity letterman jacket, and it is the reason this style has quietly taken over from flat prints.
The trade-off is washing. Patches do not like heat or aggressive agitation, and a tumble drier will fluff and flatten the pile. Treat it as the thing you wash separately on cool and it will look good for years.
Worth knowing
- Cool wash, inside out, no drier — the patches are the expensive part
- Reads as tasteful rather than ugly; wrong choice for a jumper contest where loud wins
- Right choice for the office, a school gate, or anywhere you want festive without commitment
- Sweatshirt weight — comfortable indoors, a coat still required outside
If you want something people notice from across a room instead, an all-over printed sweatshirt does that job for less money.
