Light bulbs built into a knit, which is the better version of the light-up idea.
A printed sweatshirt with lights taped inside looks like a printed sweatshirt when the lights are off — which is most of the evening. A knitted jumper with bulbs worked in is a proper jumper first and a light show second, and that is the right order given how long you actually spend in it.
LEDs bring their own routine. The battery pack sits in an inside pocket, has to be removed before the garment goes anywhere near water, and comes with a switch that is famously hard to locate through fabric while someone is making a speech.
Before the day
- Test on arrival. Faulty units are common and a December replacement takes weeks
- Buy spare batteries; the included ones are rarely fresh
- Find the off switch before you need it
- Battery pack out, cool wash, dry flat
- Knitwear plus a crowded room is hot — this belongs somewhere cold
