A jumper that looks brilliant across a room can look genuinely broken on a webcam. Cameras and fine patterns do not get along, and it has nothing to do with taste — it is how the sensor works.

The actual problem: moiré

When a fine, repeating pattern on fabric — thin stripes, a tight grid, dense small polka dots — lines up imperfectly with the grid of pixels on a camera sensor, the two patterns interfere with each other and produce a third pattern that is not actually there: a rippling, shimmering, sometimes strobing effect across the fabric. This is called the moiré effect, and it is a well-documented issue in broadcast and video production, not a quirk of bad webcams specifically. It gets worse the more you move.

A Christmas jumper is, unfortunately, an above-average offender. Fair Isle patterns, dense snowflake repeats and any tightly packed all-over print are exactly the kind of fine, regular texture that triggers it.

What actually reads well on camera

Lighting matters more than the jumper

A bold, simple design still needs light to actually land. Face a window or a lamp rather than sitting with your back to one — backlighting turns any jumper into a silhouette, however good the design is. Overhead-only lighting, the default in most home offices, tends to wash out fine detail on darker colours, so a bright, simple graphic on a lighter background photographs and films far more reliably than a dark, detailed one.
