December asks children to be festive on more days than one jumper can cover: the school event, the nativity, the party, the grandparents. A plain sweatshirt is the one that gets worn on the other days, when the loud one is in the wash or has jam on it, and its lack of a specific joke means nobody outgrows it socially.
Sweatshirt fleece rather than knit is the right call for children. It washes normally, dries fast — which matters when the same top is needed again on Thursday — and it does not scratch at the neck.
Before the day
- Size up if they are between sizes. Loose is fine, tight gets refused
- Wash inside out on cool and air dry to keep the print sharp
- Buy two sizes apart if you want siblings to match — the range genuinely allows it
- Indoor layer; a coat still goes over the top
