How we rate jumpers

A baseball pun — home plate, home for Christmas — on a blue printed sweatshirt at $64.99. A gift with one obvious recipient and very little use to anybody else.

Description

Home plate, home for Christmas. The pun does exactly one thing and does it cleanly.

Sport-specific jumpers are among the few designs people actually wear more than once, because they say something true about the wearer rather than something generic about the season. A reindeer jumper goes to the charity shop in January; a baseball one comes out again the following year and gets worn to a game in March.

Choose this if

  • You are buying for someone who plays or follows the sport — the specificity is the point
  • You want the blue colourway, which is unusual in a category dominated by red and green
  • You would rather look like you have a personality than like you own a Christmas jumper

The obvious limitation for a British audience is that baseball is a minority interest here. In the wrong room this reads as a slightly confusing sports graphic rather than a joke, which is worth knowing before you spend the money.

Printed crewneck at the seller's flat $64.99, cold wash inside out. For a sports jumper that covers more bases, so to speak, the Tstars Santa Sports design takes in basketball, hockey and golf at once.
