Most children's novelty tops are polyester, because polyester takes a bright print cheaply. Cotton breathes, which is why a child in a cotton top does not get hot and irritable in an overheated classroom — and an irritable child takes the jumper off, which ends the whole exercise. It is also softer on skin that reacts to synthetics.
The trade-off is the print. Graphics on cotton fade a little faster than on polyester and the colours are less electric to begin with. For something worn to school rather than to a contest, that is the right way round.
Before the day
- Size up if she is between sizes — cotton shrinks slightly on the first wash and children grow between ordering and wearing
- Wash inside out on cool; the graphic goes long before the fabric does
- Cotton takes a stain treatment, which fleece prints do not — useful in December
- Indoor layer, not a coat
The 3-12 range means one design covers a wide sibling gap. If you need something cheaper for a single event, the DDSOL toddler top covers the younger end.
