Seventeen pounds for a child's knit is low, and it is worth knowing where the saving comes from.
Not from the design or the sizing, but from the yarn. At this price expect thin acrylic: warm enough, perfectly serviceable, and prone to pilling within a few wears where a coat or a car seat rubs against it. That is normal at the price rather than a defect, and it does not stop the jumper looking right in the photographs everyone is actually buying it for.
The scratchiness question applies as it does to all children's knitwear. A soft long-sleeved top underneath solves it completely, and is the difference between a jumper that lasts the day and one abandoned before the nativity starts.
Before the day
- Layer something soft underneath — with acrylic this is not optional for most children
- Cool wash and dry flat; never hang a small knit wet
- Size up if they are between sizes, and expect it to be handed down
- Warm — keep an eye on them in a heated room
Good value if you want the knitted look without spending knitwear money. If it needs to survive a full school day without any negotiation, a fleece sweatshirt like the Mrocioa reindeer top is the more reliable choice.
