The jumper does almost all of the work in this outfit, and that is exactly the trap. Get the rest wrong and even a genuinely good jumper looks like an afterthought.
The general rule: let the jumper be the loud one
A busy, all-over printed jumper is already carrying the entire visual weight of the outfit. Everything else should get out of its way. Plain dark trousers or jeans, a single colour rather than a pattern, and shoes that do not compete for attention. This is not really a style opinion so much as basic visual hierarchy — one loud element reads as a statement, two loud elements read as a mess.
Trousers: dark and plain, almost always
Black, navy or dark denim ground a busy jumper and make it look like a deliberate choice rather than an accident. Anything patterned below the waist — checks, other prints — turns the whole outfit into a genuine clash, which is a different and much less flattering kind of chaos than the one the jumper is going for on its own.
Shoes: whatever the event actually calls for
This is the one place where the jumper genuinely does not dictate the rest of the outfit. Trainers for a casual office party, boots for anything outdoors or standing for hours, smarter shoes if the party sits alongside client-facing work earlier the same day. The jumper has already made its statement; the shoes do not need to make another one.
If the jumper is quiet, everything else can talk more
The rule reverses for a plain, understated jumper — see Christmas jumpers for the reluctant participant for that end of the category. A single small motif or a traditional pattern leaves room for a bolder accessory elsewhere: a festive tie, a bright scarf, a pair of statement earrings. Just not both ends being loud at once.
What actually clashes
- A printed jumper with a patterned scarf or tie. Pick one pattern per outfit.
- Sequins with anything else that catches light. Metallic trousers, glitter accessories — competing sparkle just looks busy rather than festive.
- A Santa hat with a jumper that already has Santa’s face on it. Charming in isolation, slightly overwhelming together.
None of this is complicated, and none of it requires spending more money — it is entirely about restraint everywhere the jumper is not.
