Light-up jumpers earn their price at exactly one moment: when the lights in the room go down and yours are the only ones still on. Nothing else in the category gets that reaction, which is why they keep selling despite costing double a printed sweatshirt.
They also fail in predictable ways. The battery pack sits in an inside pocket, usually with a small switch you cannot find by feel through the fabric. Batteries arrive half-dead or not at all. And the pack must come out before washing — the jumper will not survive the machine with it in.
Before the day
- Test it the day it arrives. Faulty LED wiring is common and returns take a fortnight in December
- Buy spare batteries; the supplied ones rarely last a full evening
- Find the off switch before the speeches, not during them
- Remove the battery pack before washing, and wash cool
- As a couples' pair, agree on it first — matching outfits are a joint decision, not a surprise
