Description
A knitted jumper for a toddler, which is a decision with two sides to it.
Knit photographs far better than fleece — it has texture and depth, and it is what people picture when they imagine a child in a Christmas jumper. It is also the fabric small children most often refuse to wear, because acrylic knit is scratchy at the neck and a two-year-old has no interest in your photograph.
The way through is a layer. A long-sleeved cotton top underneath removes the contact with the skin entirely and turns an unwearable jumper into a comfortable one. That is the trick every parent works out eventually, usually a year too late.
Before the day
- Put a soft top underneath — it is the difference between worn and abandoned
- Size up if they are between sizes; toddler knits shrink slightly and sleeves that are long are easily rolled
- Cool wash, dry flat, and expect some pilling — that is normal for cheap acrylic
- Warm: watch for overheating in a heated house
