Anything a two-year-old wears in December will meet gravy, felt tip, glitter and something sticky that nobody can identify. The correct response is to spend little enough that none of it matters, and to buy something that goes through a normal wash with the rest of the load.
Sweatshirt fabric is soft at the neck, which is the other half of the equation. Toddlers do not object to designs; they object to textures, and a scratchy knit is off within ten minutes regardless of how good it looked in the photograph you had planned.
Before the day
- Size up if they are between sizes — toddler sizing is wildly inconsistent and slightly big is always the safer error
- Check the neck opening; tight head-holes cause most of the refusals at this age
- Wash inside out on cool — the print ages before the fabric does
- A layer, not a coat
