Christmas Jumper Day is coming — read the guide to winning your office party

The cheapest time to buy a Christmas jumper is not December. It is the week after Christmas, when the entire category becomes unsellable stock overnight and retailers would rather discount it heavily than store it for eleven months.

Why the discounts are so steep

A Christmas jumper has one of the shortest genuine selling windows of any garment — realistically about four weeks. On the 27th of December, remaining stock is worth considerably less to a seller than it was on the 1st, because almost nobody is buying a novelty Christmas jumper in January except at a steep discount, and holding it until next year ties up money and warehouse space for a design that may not even sell as well a second time round. That pressure is exactly why the January sales rail is where novelty knitwear ends up.

The other January option: don’t buy new at all

January sales are new stock at a discount. Charity shops in January are a completely different source, restocked with barely-worn festive clothing donated straight after the season — and usually cheaper still. Second-hand Christmas jumpers covers that route properly, including the Oxfam research on just how rarely a new novelty item actually gets worn before it is given away.
