A tradition that only works if everyone joins in fails badly the moment half the office cannot find their size. Extended ranges exist in this category, but they are not evenly spread, and the label on a large range is not always telling you what you think.
Where the range actually stops
Look through the wider catalogue and a clear pattern shows up: most novelty Christmas jumpers stop at XL or 2XL. A smaller number, mostly from the marketplace brands doing 3D-printed all-over graphics, genuinely go further — several of Arvilhill’s hoodies and pullovers run to 3XL, and at least one design in the catalogue is sized up to 4XL.

That is genuinely useful if you are buying for a group with a wide range of builds, or if you personally wear above a standard XL — it means the option exists, rather than being limited to whatever a single small-batch UK brand happens to stock.
The catch: a big label does not mean a big garment
This is the part worth being careful about. A great many of the brands offering the widest size ranges — Arvilhill among them — are sized to an Asian fit, which runs one to two sizes smaller than UK or US expectations at every point on the scale. A 3XL from one of these brands can fit closer to a Western XL or 2XL, not the oversized garment the label implies.
In practice that means the size range being wide is not, on its own, proof that the largest size will be large enough. The only reliable check is the actual chest measurement in the listing, compared against a jumper you already own and know fits — the full method is in why your Christmas jumper arrived two sizes too small.
What tends to work better
- Unisex cuts are generally more generous through the body than fitted men’s or women’s lines, since they are drafted to cover a wider range of builds by design.
- Established Western brands — Hanes, Tipsy Elves, and the officially licensed film and TV ranges — tend to size closer to what the label says, because that is the market they were built for. Fewer of them go past 2XL, but the sizes they do offer are more predictable.
- Hoodies and cardigans generally have more built-in room than a fitted crewneck, since the format itself is looser to start with.
- Always check the actual measurement, every time, regardless of the brand. It is the only step that reliably works.
Buying for a group with mixed sizes
If you are ordering for a whole team, favour a listing that states its size range clearly and runs to at least 3XL, and get one person to try their size before the rest of the order goes in. It is a five-minute check against an expensive one if the whole batch turns out to run small.
