Christmas Jumper Day is coming — read the guide to winning your office party

Britain and America both dedicate a day to wearing a deliberately terrible jumper. They are not the same day, they were not started by the same people, and they do not mean quite the same thing — even though the jumpers themselves are now identical, largely because both events shop from the same catalogue of Amazon sellers.

Christmas Jumper Day: the UK, and a specific charity

Christmas Jumper Day is run by Save the Children. It launched on 14 December 2012, and the format has stayed the same since: pick a Friday in December, wear a jumper, donate a couple of pounds. It has raised more than £42 million for the charity.

Because it is tied to one named charity and one specific date each year, it functions less like a fashion trend and more like a fixture — the way a school picks a non-uniform day. Offices and schools organise around it rather than around the general idea of Christmas jumpers.

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day: the US, and no charity at all — at first

The American version has a different shape. It began in 2011, created informally rather than by an organisation, as a way to show off deliberately awful sweaters, and it falls on the third Friday of December every year rather than a date set fresh each time.

It picked up a charitable side later — in 2014 it partnered with Save the Children on a campaign called “Make the World Better with a Sweater” — but that was added on top of an existing tradition, rather than being the reason it started.

So what is actually different?

What has actually merged

The stock. Almost every jumper sold under either name now comes from the same pool of Amazon sellers and the same handful of manufacturers, which is why a search for “ugly Christmas sweater” in Ohio and a search for “Christmas jumper” in Yorkshire turn up largely the same products with different spelling in the title. The tradition diverged; the supply chain did not.

Whichever day you are dressing for, the same buying advice applies. Start with how to choose an ugly Christmas jumper.
