Bought for photographs, which is worth being honest about because it changes the advice.
White reads beautifully on camera and disastrously in real life with a child in it. A white jumper on a six-year-old at a Christmas party has a working life measured in hours, and the things that end it are gravy, chocolate and orange squash, in that order. If the plan is a photograph in the morning and a change of clothes afterwards, this is the right buy. If it needs to survive a full school day, it is not.
Cotton is the redeeming feature. It is softer against a child's neck than acrylic knit, less likely to be complained about, and it takes a warm wash and a stain treatment, which fleece printing does not.
Before the day
- Wash it before the event so it is soft, and again straight after any spill — cotton holds stains if left
- Size up if they are between sizes; children's cotton knit shrinks slightly on the first wash
- Bring a spare top to the party
- Warmer than a printed sweatshirt, so watch for overheating indoors
